A Quiet Place (2018): A Horror Thrilling Tale of Silence and Survival

Exploring the Quiet, Terrifying World of A Quiet Place (2018)

Day 89: Amid the many worn-out missing persons flyers, a family quietly tiptoes barefoot. They move through a vacant store in a ghost town. The mother, Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt), looks carefully through a collection of uncollected prescription bottles. She searches for medicine for her eldest child, Marcus (Noah Jupe), who is sick. Evelyn gives Marcus some medicine and uses sign language to reassure her Deaf daughter, Regan (Millicent Simmonds), that her brother is okay. Regan then checks on her younger brother, Beau (Cade Woodward), who is drawing a picture of a rocket on the floor. He signs to Regan, “Rocket. That’s how we’ll get away.” He then climbs the mostly empty shelves and reaches for a space shuttle toy. The toy falls from the shelf, but Regan catches it before it hits the ground. Meanwhile, the father, Lee Abbott (John Krasinski), has scavenged some electronics. He wants to boost a radio signal. He has also found some wire cutters for Regan. Evelyn signs to the family, “It’ll be dark soon,” and they prepare to leave when they are struck with horror. Beau is holding the electronic space shuttle toy, which Lee carefully takes from him, removing the two AA batteries. He signs to his youngest son, “It’s too loud.” As the family departs, Regan secretly returns the toy to Beau. Beau also grabs the batteries on his way out.

The Abbotts walk home silently along a sand path they’ve made. As they reach a bridge, the space shuttle toy suddenly makes an electronic sound. The sound comes from Beau at the back of the group. A horrified Lee races toward his son, but it’s too late—a creature quickly grabs and kills Beau.

Day 472: The Abbotts have returned to their familial ranch. Lee is in the cellar of the homestead. There, he has set up an extensive array of reconnaissance apparatus. This setup includes cameras and screens along with his radio and gadgets. He uses these in the hope of connecting with fellow survivors. Additionally, news clippings narrate tales of an extraterrestrial incursion. Lee’s notes, with phrases like “blind,” “assault sound,” and “defensive layer,” are juxtaposed with these clippings. Meanwhile, Evelyn finds refuge in a basement where she delicately hangs a mobile she has crafted. Evelyn is expectant. She prepares an oxygen tank. It is linked to an infant breathing mask and rests beside a covered, soundproof bassinet. Ascending to the pinnacle of his grain storehouse, Lee gazes upon images of Beau. Evelyn implores Regan to inform her father that supper is served, to which she reluctantly complies. Following a moment of silent supplication, they partake in a humble repast presented upon leaves of lettuce instead of plates. Subsequently, Regan and Marcus start playing an intense game of monopoly. During the game, Marcus inadvertently topples a lamp and ignites the carpet. Lee acts swiftly to extinguish the flames, and they sit in muted anticipation of the consequences. It seems they have narrowly escaped calamity until a tumultuous noise erupts from the rooftop. Peering through the window, Lee is astonished, yet relieved, to witness a raccoon plummet from above. He descends into the cellar, tending to a cochlear implant processor designed to assist his daughter in hearing. Evelyn joins him. They exchange smiles and share a pair of diminutive headphones. Together, they sway gently to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.”

Day 473: Lee diligently scatters an abundance of sand along their leisurely path. Meanwhile, Evelyn busies herself in the basement. She meticulously gauges her blood pressure. With her due date a mere few weeks away, she applies a stethoscope to her abdomen, discerning the vigorous rhythm of the heartbeat within. Regan gracefully enters the domicile, mindful to tread upon the solid sections of the floor that do not yield beneath her feet; her intent is to descend into the cellar, yet her father interjects. He has taken the initiative to affix petite speakers from a sound system to her new cochlear implant processor, eager to equip Regan with them, but she gestures her refusal, asserting they shall not function. Undeterred, Lee passes them to her nonetheless and embarks on a venture. He desires for Marcus to accompany him, yet the lad is engulfed by trepidation and declines the invitation. Instead, Regan expresses her wish to join him, but Lee implores her to remain and attend to her mother. She scurries to her chamber, attempting to activate the new cochlear implant processor. When it proves ineffective, despair overwhelms her. Regan swiftly assembles a bag, which includes her cutting tools and a wrapped item from her cabinet, and departs from the homestead. Meanwhile, Lee escorts his son to the river, imparting the wisdom that producing soft sounds is permissible as long as louder noises are in proximity. By the cascading waters, they converse freely without fear of eavesdroppers. Marcus inquires why Regan was not permitted to join them, questioning whether Lee harbors blame toward her for the plight of their companion, for she is laden with self-reproach. In response to Marcus’s assertion that if Lee still holds affection for her, he ought to convey such sentiments, Regan arrives at the footbridge where a makeshift memorial stands in honor of their dearly departed friend. She gracefully retrieves an object from her bureau, revealing the space transport toy, and deftly employs forceps to sever a wire that enables the toy to radiate light silently. Meanwhile, at home, Evelyn endeavors to elevate a laundry bag from the cellar, only to have it ensnared upon the staircase. With determination, she manages to liberate it, resulting in her unfortunate fall and exposing the hidden menace of an upright nail protruding from the step.

Upon their return home, Lee and Marcus are taken aback by the unexpected appearance of an elderly gentleman emerging from the depths of the forest. Their astonishment deepens as they subsequently discover the lifeless form of his beloved companion lying on the ground nearby. Lee urgently implores the elderly man to maintain his silence; however, he responds with a piercing cry. Seizing Marcus, Lee flees as the man is swiftly ensnared and dispatched by a sinister intruder. Back within the sanctuary of their abode, Evelyn feels her waters break. Venturing into the cellar, she inadvertently impales her foot upon a protruding nail from the step. She manages to stifle a cry, yet inadvertently drops the picture frames she was clutching, thereby alerting an intruder into their domicile. Evelyn extracts her foot from the nail, activating the crimson lights that illuminate the premises as a harbinger of danger, and scours the shelves for a mechanical kitchen clock. The intruder descends the stairs into the basement, keenly attuned to any semblance of life. When the clock emits its alarm, the intruder is drawn to it, allowing Evelyn the opportunity to ascend. She glimpses another assailant lurking in the front yard. Taking refuge upstairs, Evelyn sinks into the bathtub, her labor intensifying as the intruder approaches. Meanwhile, Lee has returned and is alarmed to witness the red lights ablaze. He gestures ‘rocket’ to his son and subsequently instructs, ‘I require you to emit a sound of greater volume. You possess the ability to do so.’ Grabbing his shotgun, Lee watches as Marcus rushes to a designated area and ignites a fuse, triggering a series of fireworks. Lee methodically searches the house and enters the bathroom, where he is confronted with an empty tub stained with his wife’s blood. A wave of despair overtakes him, believing Evelyn to be deceased, only to discover her safely concealed in the bathtub with their newborn son. Meanwhile, Marcus, en route back to the house, encounters the ominous presence of the intruder. In a frantic bid for escape, he races into the cornfield, yet collides with the wheel of a farm truck, rendering himself unconscious.

Regan has returned and noted the beacon of light emanating from the cornfield, yet remains oblivious to the encroaching figure behind her. As the entity approaches, Regan’s cochlear implant initiates a piercing feedback, startling the intruder into retreat. Regan reunites with Marcus, and they ascend to the loft of the grain silo. Meanwhile, Lee has escorted Evelyn to the basement, placing their newborn in the soundproof crib. Contemplating the day’s events, Evelyn regrets not bringing the child sooner and, before yielding to much-needed rest, extracts a promise from Lee to safeguard their progeny. Lee departs in search of the children as water cascades into the basement below. Subsequently, Evelyn awakens to the alarming sight of the basement flooding. Complicating matters, an intruder descends into the chamber, while the infant slumbers in the open crib. With utmost caution, Evelyn retrieves her child and stealthily manoeuvres to the rear of the basement, sheltering behind the torrent inundating the room. Above the silo, Marcus assures, “Do not fear, he shall come for us,” but Regan disavows his claim, declaring, “He shall come for you.” Abruptly, a trapdoor at the silo’s apex gives way, causing Marcus to plunge within. As he gradually succumbs to the grain, the intruder in the basement is distracted by the noise. The door splinters, hurtling into the silo, narrowly missing Marcus. Regan plunges into the silo and valiantly rescues her brother by pushing the trapdoor toward him, enabling his grasp. However, she begins to sink into the grain. Marcus ascends the trapdoor, extracting his sister to safety. Secure in the doorway of the silo, they are then startled by a crash above. The intruder from the beleaguered cellar springs into the storeroom whilst the children shield themselves beneath the trapdoor threshold. Once again, they seem to be beset by misfortune until Regan’s cochlear implant emits a shrill feedback, compelling the intruder to plummet through the side of the storeroom.

Regan and Marcus elegantly extricate themselves from the storehouse and into a pickup truck. Lee has arrived on the scene and seizes a hatchet, only to be promptly pursued by the creature, provoking Marcus’s exclamation. Upon hearing this, the creature advances towards the truck, intent on breaching its confines. This time, as Regan’s processor initiates its piercing input, she deftly deactivates it. At long last, the creature may proceed with its relentless assault upon the truck. Lee, grievously injured, shares a poignant glance with his daughter, signaling, “I love you. I have always loved you.” He then unleashes a cry of self-sacrifice to protect the children. They place the truck in neutral and roll it back to the house to reunite with their mother. Evelyn and the children perceive the creature’s approach, prompting them to retreat once more into the house and seek refuge in the cellar. Regan, for the first time, encounters the remnants of her father’s labor devoted to repairing and enhancing her cochlear implant processor. A wave of emotion overwhelms her just as the lights flicker. The creature descends into the cellar, cornering them. Regan, however, examines a handwritten note from her father which reads, “What is their weakness?” She then casts a fleeting glance at the hearing aids upon his workstation. Suddenly enlightened, she activates her cochlear implant processor, generating input that causes the creature to flinch. Regan amplifies the input by positioning the processor near a microphone. The creature falters and then gradually regains its footing, yet Evelyn seizes Lee’s shotgun, obliterating its head. Witnessing on the surveillance screens that this minor uproar has seemingly summoned every creature in the vicinity to their abode, Regan augments the speakers while Evelyn confidently rams the shotgun, a wry smile gracing her countenance.
