Cecilia Kass is trapped in a toxic marriage with her cruel and monstrous husband, optics researcher Adrian Griffin. She escapes belatedly with the help of her sister Emily. After sedating Adrian with Diazepam, she makes her escape and frees their dog. This action triggers the car alarm. A furious Adrian chases after her. In her flight with Emily, Cecilia accidentally leaves the medication bottle behind, which Adrian later discovers in the street.
Two weeks later, Cecilia is hiding out at James Lanier’s home. He is her best friend. She is also with his teenage daughter Sydney. Cecilia lives as a recluse plagued by fears of the outside world. When Emily visits, she panics, fearing Adrian will come after her. However, Emily brings news that Adrian has taken his own life. His brother Tom informs Cecilia of her late brother’s inheritance. She accepts it only to fund Sydney’s education. She also wants to support James’ family. Nonetheless, Cecilia feels consumed by an unsettling sensation. She thinks she’s being watched. At night, she senses a hidden presence that only she can perceive. At midnight, as she sleeps beside Sydney, the blanket is mysteriously tugged away, revealing flickers of light. Cecilia awakens, suspicious of the covers at the foot of the bed. When she tries to pull them back, they resist her efforts. Her reaction stirs both Sydney and James, but she cannot articulate what she believes she saw.
Cecilia attends a meeting for a prospective engineering position. When she opens her portfolio to showcase her work, she suddenly faints. After a hospital visit, she learns she was drugged, having too much Diazepam in her system, which caused her fainting spell. Cecilia discovers the Diazepam bottle Adrian had left behind. She feels threatened. Cecilia visits Emily, who is upset with her after receiving a scathing email from Cecilia’s account. Looking through her emails, Cecilia finds the sent message and has an emotional breakdown. Sydney tries to comfort her but is affected by an unseen force, leading her to believe Cecilia is at fault. James decides to take Sydney to a safer location. Meanwhile, Cecilia investigates her house and discovers her work in the attic’s plumbing space, along with a large kitchen knife from James and photographs of her sleeping, taken by a hidden stalker. Realizing she isn’t alone, she dumps a can of paint on the ladder upon noticing movement, revealing a man in a suit. He escapes, washing off the paint before she leaves. They struggle until Cecilia breaks free and flees, getting into a Lyft she called. She heads to Adrian’s home, sneaks into his lab, and finds an experimental suit that could render him invisible. Cecilia takes the suit and hides it but is soon confronted by the Invisible Man until her dog returns and helps her escape.
Cecilia arranges a meeting with Emily at a restaurant, where she apologizes and confesses her love. Emily’s skepticism begins to fade as they connect, and Cecilia reveals she found an invisible suit in Adrian’s lab. Suddenly, a large knife is drawn across Emily’s throat, killing her instantly. The blade is placed in Cecilia’s hand, leading to her arrest and transfer to an asylum. Questioning her sanity and discovering she is pregnant with Adrian’s child, Cecilia gives in, only to be confronted by Tom, who reveals he was collaborating with his brother all along. Tom insists she will lose her fortune and be committed indefinitely unless she returns to Adrian with his child. Furious at Tom for killing her sister, Cecilia refuses. After Tom leaves, she steals one of his pens. In her room, Cecilia prepares to take her life by cutting her wrist with the pen, but the Invisible Man intervenes. Luring him back into the open, she stabs him twice with the pen, causing his suit to malfunction, making him flicker in and out of sight. A security guard rushes in to stop her but is stunned by the flickering figure who knocks him down. Cecilia bolts into the hallway, encountering several guards who also witness the erratic figure. The Invisible Man overpowers them before escaping into the stormy night. Cecilia finds him, but he overcomes her, declaring he will now go after Sydney.
Cecilia warns James of the impending danger, and he hurriedly returns home to witness an unseen figure attacking his daughter. In a desperate attempt to intervene, James suffers a brutal beating in front of a terrified Sydney. Cecilia bursts in, dousing the figure with a fire extinguisher, revealing his identity before unleashing a torrent of bullets from a fallen officer’s gun. The Invisible Man collapses, succumbing to his injuries. Cecilia unmasks him, revealing Tom as the perpetrator. Meanwhile, Adrian is found bound and entombed in his house when a SWAT team storms in. James explains that the evidence points to Tom using his brother to reach Cecilia, yet she remains convinced they conspired together and that Adrian orchestrated Tom’s downfall should things go awry. Still reeling from the chaos, Cecilia calls Adrian, agreeing to meet for dinner while wearing a wire, hoping James, positioned outside, could help extract a confession. When she questions him about stalking, Adrian initially denies it but later suggests otherwise. As Cecilia excuses herself to the bathroom, Adrian realizes something is amiss; suddenly, he is yanked back and his throat is cut. He falls to the floor, bleeding out. Shocked, Cecilia enters and, panicking, calls the police to report an apparent suicide. She then revels in Adrian’s dying moments, hinting she used his invisible suit. James rushes in, discovering Cecilia escaping with Adrian’s suit and dog. Realizing she orchestrated this murder, he ultimately lets her go. Cecilia slips into the night, perhaps plotting to seize her husband’s work for her own gain.
